Skin cancer of the lips accounts for 10 percent of all skin cancer cases. Over 3,500 new cases of skin cancer of the lips are diagnosed each year. Whether you’re skiing and snowboarding this winter, laying out next summer, or just cruising around town anytime of year, here are a few things you can do to help you keep your lips protected:

Choose your lipgloss
carefully - Because of it’s shiny, reflective nature, some dermatologists claim that applying lipgloss and then going in the sun is the equivalent of taking a magnifying glass and focusing the concentrated sun rays directly on your lips. Wow. I’m a lipgloss junkie and I’ve never realized how harmful some lip products could be. If you’re going to wear lipgloss, choose one that has a high level of SPF included in its formula.

Use a high SPF Chapstick or lip balm - If your absolute favorite lipgloss doesn’t have SPF in it, you MUST find a chapstick or baselayer lip balm that has it so that you can wear the protective product underneath. Look for an SPF level on the label, or for ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide (sunscreens that will provide the protection your lips need). We would recommend wearing a lip balm with at least SPF 30 underneath all your lip colors at all times. The bonus: these products will keep your lips extra moisturized too!

Opt for a lipstick instead - Since lipsticks have more pigment than lipglosses, using one will provide you with better sun protection. Matte lipsticks especially have an advantage over glosses because they are less reflective and have the most coverage of lipstick formulas.

Yellowing of the teeth is a natural part of aging, but lifestyle and dietary factors like smoking and drinking red wine and coffee quicken the process. White teeth make a beautiful smile! Simple tips at home for whitening your teeth can really work if you do them consistently. Listed below are some simple tips to turn smiles from ashen to alabaster:

1. Brushing and Flossing Habits: Brush your teeth twice daily - as soon as you wake up and last thing before going to bed. Brushing teeth daily with powdered neem leaves not only makes them pearl white ‘but also keeps them healthy. You can also try brushing with a mixture of soda bicarb and powdered salt to make your teeth sparkling white. Rubbing salt on the teeth and rinsing off after sometime is equally helpful in making the teeth sparking white. You should rinse your mouth after you eat anything, so that food does not stick to the teeth. Flossing after every meal helps to erase stains between teeth.

2. Things to avoid: Quit smoking as tobacco is the top tooth stainer. Smoking tends to discolour the teeth to an unpleasant grey. Do not chew betel leaf, betel nut or tobacco. Avoid excessive tea/coffee/beverages, as they tend to stain the teeth. Don’t scrape the surface of teeth with any sharp instrument as these will roughen the teeth and make them even more yellow.

3. Homemade remedies: Dry and grind orange peels to a coarse powder and brush your teeth daily with this powder for making them beautiful and sparkling white. Eat sugarcane daily to make the teeth strong and beautiful. Roast full turmeric and powder it. Apply this mixture on the teeth daily to get sparkling white teeth. Boil fenugreek seeds in water, let it cool and then gargle with the strained water to make your teeth strong and sparkling white. Powdered cloves and lump sugar not only makes your teeth white but also keeps them healthy if used daily.

4. Dentist’s choice: a dental tray together with a gel kit lightens teeth in about a fortnight period. Whitening strips are effective for whitening front teeth while paint-on gels can cover all the teeth.

Normal Skin
One hundred percent normal skin is a rare blessing.
• It is smooth textured with no visible pores.
• It shows no signs of dryness in youth.
• It has an even tone that is not too pale, sallow or red.
• It will tend towards dryness with age and as a result of external influence.

Morning
• Cleanse using a wipe-off or wash-off cleanser for normal-to-dry skin.
• Tone using alcohol-free toner one a water-moistened cotton ball.
• Hydrate with a moisturizer for normal skin.

Evening
• Remove your eye make-up first, then cleanse, as above, but more thoroughly.
• Apply moisturizer or a lightweight night lotion.

Dry Skin
• It has a fine, matter texture.
• It may be on the sensitive side.
• There are usually no open pores.
• It is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles than other skin types.
• It is more vulnerable to the effects of central heating and sunlight.
• Very fair skin is often dry.

5-minute Skin-Care Morning
• Cleanse quickly, using a wipe-off cleanser for dry skin.
• Tone, using alcohol-free toner on water-moistened cotton ball.
• Hydrate with a moisturizer for dry skin, preferably one containing a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Avoid and protect your eyes.

Evening
• Remove your eye make-up.
• Cleanse as above.
• Apply a night-cream.

Oily Skin
• It has open pores.
• It will shine an hour or so after washing.
• It may look oily on waking.
• It has a tendency to spots and blackheads.
• It is less susceptible to wrinkles than other skin types.

5-minute skin-care Morning
• Cleanse quickly, using a wipe-off cleanser for normal-to-oily skin or a soap-free cleansing bar. Rinse very thoroughly.
• Tone using a toner that should be diluted if it contains alcohol so that it is not too drying. Moisten your cotton wool with water.
• Moisturize where needed, using an oil-free or gel moisturizer.

Evening
• Remove eye make-up, then cleanse as above, but more thoroughly.
• Apply moisturizer just where needed.

Sensitive Skin
• Looks fragile and translucent.
• It is generally dry.
• It may have freckles.
• It tends to become flushed, blotchy and irritated in extremes of temperature or through using harsh cleansing products.
• It may suffer from broken red veins, dermatitis, and allergies.

5-minute skin-care
Follow the program for dry skin.

Special tips
• Look for hypoallergenic products that are scent-free.
• Before trying a new product do a patch test. Rub a good amount on to your shoulder and leave it one overnight. If there is no sign of irritation, apply some to your neck and wait again. If there is no reaction, then the product will probably be safe to use on your face.

Black Skin
• Tends towards extremes of oiliness or dryness, which can be a real problem, since these conditions are more visible against a darker complexion. Dry black skin may appear grayish in color.
• It needs very gentle care as face scrubs, spots, ear piercing and hair removal can make the supply of melanin uneven, leading to skin that is darker or lighter in some places than others.

Sun, wind, saltwater, pollution, and chemicals are just some of the shine-depleting elements your hair may be subjected to on a daily basis. They can strip your hair of its natural oils and create build-up leaving it dull and lifeless. Fortunately, Mother Nature has a few remedies to share.

The Alluring Avocado
Mash an avocado (one avocado for short hair, two for long) in a bowl until it forms a thick paste. Spread the paste on your hair from root to tip and leave on for 20 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Avocados are high in fatty acids and nutrients. Feed your hair!

Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar
Mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar with one quart of water and use as a hair rinse after your regular shampoo. Rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, apple cider vinegar helps break down residue build-up leaving your hair soft and full of shine. Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar and it will be shining in no time.

Eggs Over Olive Oil
Beat together two eggs for short hair, three for long, and add in three tablespoons of olive oil. Coat your hair from root to tip and leave on for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Eggs contain eleven essential nutrients and are packed with protein. Combine them with olive oil for conditioning and nourishment and you have one powerful duo.

Coconut Craze
Warm three tablespoons of coconut oil and gently comb into your hair from root to tip. Wrap your hair in a hot towel and let the oil sit for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse. Loaded with antioxidants, coconut oil works to smooth dry and damaged cuticles and lock in shine.

Life doesn't have to be dull and neither does your hair! It's time to shine! Open your cabinet and start mixing, then sit back and bask in your natural glow.
